About Ocean Reef Club

Ocean Reef Club is a 4,000 acre private community located on the northern tip of Key Largo, Florida.  It is known for its Caribbean flair, unparalleled yachting and diving waters, exceptional club service, and wide array of activities.  For decades, the words private and exclusive have become synonymous with Ocean Reef Club.  Over the years, the Club has hosted presidents and heads of state, movie stars and sports heroes, diplomats and many of the most successful business people in the United States.

History

Ocean Reef Club was originally purchased as a small fishing camp in 1945 by Morris Baker, a Minneapolis developer.  A few years later, a small 26-room inn was built. The following years saw more progress as the boat channel and marina and first nine holes of golf were added.  As the Club continued to grow, 26 villas were built in 1956 and more added each year thereafter.  By this time, Ocean Reef Club had become world-renowned.  In the spring of 1993, ownership of Ocean Reef Club passed to the property owner members who now operate the Club through its Board of Directors. Since the beginning, the Club’s traditions and sense of community have been carefully maintained; upholding a retreat-like atmosphere within family-friendly surroundings.

Membership

Ocean Reef is a privately owned equity club with a limited number of property owning and non-property owning members.  Membership is by invitation.  Although a small number of member-families reside at Ocean Reef year-round, most live elsewhere.  They come for the holidays, or to stay for the winter season.  Other members, from warmer climates, come during the summer, when a steady southeasterly breeze keeps Ocean Reef cool. 

Security and Location

The secluded setting of the Club makes it – by today’s standards – a worry-free world.  Ocean Reef is surrounded by water on three sides and controls access by land on the fourth.  Only members and invited guests are admitted through the Front Gate, into the airport or into the canals.  For this reason, the U.S. Secret Service has called Ocean Reef Club one of the most secure communities in the United States.  There are many ways to get to Ocean Reef.  It is just 55 miles south of Miami International Airport for those arriving by car.  There is a 4,000-foot airstrip which allows members to land their own aircraft or arrive by chartered aircraft.  If arriving by boat, Ocean Reef is just 28 nautical miles south of Miami.
